Chase Winter Magic in Witsand: A Coastal Escape Awaits

Coastal towns are frequently praised for their summer attractions, but who says you can’t find winter magic by the sea?
Witsand, only three hours from Cape Town, demonstrated this point during a recent visit.
After visiting Witsand a few years ago with less-than-ideal accommodation recollections, returning during the misty winter season felt like the right way to rediscover its allure. This time, a cozy studio apartment overlooking Witsand Beach became home, complete with a large kitchen, an open-plan bedroom, and a lounge with panoramic ocean views. The blue and white design subtly represented the beach atmosphere.
When the rain started to fall, we decided to go out for dinner. Despite the flooded roads, Ellie’s on Main provided a cozy retreat. The rugby teams were cheered on by locals, and pizzas were devoured in the vibrant atmosphere. The energy was soaked up before the evening was cozily spent at the flat, accompanied by the soothing sound of the ocean in the background.
This morning, a magnificent picture was greeted: a pinkish glow spreading across Witsand Beach. A peaceful moment with coffee and a book was embraced, setting the tone for the day ahead. Breakfast was served at The Anchorage Beach Restaurant, where warm cappuccinos and hearty country platters were enjoyed while warmth was sought indoors, away from the cool seaside breeze.
The next stop was the Witsand Market, Koffie ‘n Kletz. Browsing through the many goods and handmade items becomes an enjoyable experience. A small on-site coffee shop served superb vetkoek, which was available fresh or frozen for later consumption. With rain falling again, I spent the rest of the afternoon covered under a blanket, reading and viewing the ocean through the window.
Spasie on Breede Restaurant, formerly known as Pili Pili, provided another culinary feast for dinner. The toasty fireplace and riverfront vista provided an ideal setting for a traditional seafood dinner. The service excelled, prompting a repeat visit the following morning for a country breakfast and espresso.
Before returning home, a second trip at Koffie ‘n Kletz allowed for the purchase of further local souvenirs.
Winter in Witsand has a unique magical quality. Regardless of the season, this small town offers a pleasant retreat full of charm and tranquility.
