Unplug and Unwind: A Serene Escape at Petervale Guest Farm
The drive from Cape Town to Prince Alfred Hamlet is smooth, passing through Ceres and continuing along a straight road that leads directly to the campsite. Surrounded by forests, the area offers numerous camping spots to choose from. Luckily, we found one with a built-in braai grid, since we had forgotten ours.
The intense heat had us quickly setting up the tent. Once that was done, we went on a search for the bathroom facilities. Although there are no power outlets at the campsites themselves, a charging point is available near the bathrooms for any devices that need it.
When night fell, Courtney got the fire going while someone else took care of the barbecue. We ate a quiet dinner while taking in the sounds of nature beneath the sky. The pleasant wind and starry sky made for the ideal setting for some introspection.
After preparing breakfast the next morning and getting ready, we headed out for a walk. The picturesque 40–45 minute route at Petervale Farm is well-known for its descent to a breathtaking waterfall and a deep rock pool called “God’s Bathtub.” We enthusiastically went in search of it.
However, after hiking for over an hour and struggling to locate the correct path, we decided to stop, realizing the waterfall’s location was still elusive. Though a bit frustrated, we were treated to an incredible view overlooking the Ceres Valley.
We came upon a swing while returning. After a while, swinging brought back recollections of childhood, when one would spend hours just doing that. But it was too hot, so we went back to the tent to take a quick snooze before moving on to the lagoon.
I decided to take a chance even though I normally wouldn’t swim in a river with an unclear bottom. I had a terrific time swimming with Courtney and enjoying the coolness, so it turned out that getting in the water was the best decision.
Courtney started the fire as suppertime drew close and the chops and roosterbrood were ready. The warmth of the evening and the unobstructed night sky created a wonderful atmosphere that was ideal for daydreaming or hoping to freeze time.
We took one more dip in the lagoon before disembarking the following day when the sun warmed the water. I will most definitely be returning to Petervale Guest Farm, which charges R160 per adult per night.
