If you’re looking for a memorable escape into the bush, Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge inside Pilanesberg National Park delivers an experience that balances indulgence with adventure. I began with lunch at the Kwa Lefikeng Restaurant, where the grilled pork chops with croquette potato and grain mustard sauce quickly became one of the best meals I’ve enjoyed on the road. Dining here feels even more special thanks to sweeping views of the surrounding bushveld.

After lunch, I made my way to The Hide, a unique tunnel-accessed viewing point at the waterhole. What unfolded was one of my most unforgettable wildlife encounters: elephants and springbok appeared just metres away, and the quiet intimacy of the setting made me pause in awe. You can encounter fascinating wildlife at the Lion and Reptile Parks, or dive into adrenaline-fuelled fun at Adventure Freaks, where go-karts, paintballing, and archery keep thrill-seekers entertained. Families will love the putt-putt course and swimming pools, offering a chance to relax and play at a gentler pace.

When you’re ready to slow down, the village caters just as well to food lovers and laid-back travellers. With a variety of restaurants and cafés, you can sit back, enjoy a meal, and soak in the buzz around you. If adventure with a view is what you’re after, the Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort promises an experience you won’t forget. My mom and I hopped into a cable car, and as it gently swayed up the mountainside, I felt that familiar rush of adrenaline mixed with anticipation. The higher we climbed, the more breathtaking the views became, revealing Hartbeespoort Dam and the surrounding valley from an entirely new perspective.

At the summit, the 360-degree lookout took our breath away. Restaurants and a bar kept the atmosphere lively, while interactive boards added fascinating insights into the area’s history. We found endless photo opportunities, and the space encouraged us to linger and savour the moment. This cableway isn’t just about the ride; it’s about seeing the North West from a spectacular vantage point.

Little Paris

For something playful and utterly charming, Little Paris in Hartbeespoort delivers a whimsical experience that feels like a slice of Europe in South Africa. The miniature Eiffel Tower peeking through the trees sets the tone, and as soon as I saw its reflection in the lake, I knew this stop would be a memorable one. The entire space feels like a postcard, with a boutique clothing store, deli, gift shop, and café filling the air with the aroma of croissants and coffee.

The most enchanting part is the bridge where visitors attach colourful “lovers’ locks,” creating a glittering tribute to shared memories. I bought my own lock, engraved my initials, and added it to the collection before snapping the quintessential Eiffel Tower photo. This attraction oozes romance, making it ideal for couples, but it’s equally delightful for anyone looking to add a touch of magic to their trip.

The topsy-turvy experience messes with your balance and guarantees a good laugh, especially when you try to snap a few quirky photos.

Beyond the house itself, the attraction offers plenty to keep you entertained. Kids can bounce around on jumping castles or enjoy coin-operated rides, while families can settle in for a braai or picnic in the shaded outdoor areas. It’s a light-hearted stop that adds fun and playfulness to any North West itinerary.
