Camping at Rivierzicht River Resort, Robertson: A Laid-Back Breede River Escape

Camping at Rivierzicht River Resort in Robertson offers a relaxed riverside escape just outside Cape Town, where spacious campsites, friendly neighbours, and long summer days on the Breede River turn a simple camping trip into a story worth telling.

In the Western Cape alone, you will find no shortage of camping spots, yet now and then, one stands out for all the right reasons. Just under two hours from Cape Town, we discovered Rivierzicht River Resort in Robertson, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like the kind of place where time slows down and stress quietly disappears.

To begin with, Rivierzicht River Resort lies about 13 kilometres outside of Robertson. The final 3.6 kilometres are on a gravel road, which adds to the sense of stepping away from city life and into something more peaceful. We visited during the peak of summer, so the days were hot, humid and perfectly suited to life by the river.

Importantly, Rivierzicht River Resort caters to more than just campers. In addition to camping stands, the resort also offers chalet accommodation and glamping tents for guests who prefer a little extra comfort. Since camping is our holiday style of choice, we focused on the campsite section. There are around 30 stands available, and it is a good idea to chat directly with the owners to find the stand that best suits your setup. Tariffs vary depending on the accommodation type and season, so always check the latest rates before booking.

Each campsite is impressively spacious, with an average size of around 12 metres by 25 metres. As a result, there is plenty of room for tents, vehicles and camp furniture without feeling cramped. Every stand has access to a 220V electrical outlet, as well as a braai drum, which makes camp cooking easy and enjoyable. Some stands include a gazebo for extra shade, while others are surrounded by trees that offer natural cover from the summer sun. Additionally, each stand has a water tap with a basin, which is incredibly convenient for washing dishes and general camp clean-up.

Because the resort sits right alongside the Breede River, fishing becomes part of the daily rhythm for many campers. Even if fishing is not on your agenda, the river offers a refreshing escape from the heat, especially during the warmer months.

Although there is no tuckshop on site, Rivierzicht River Resort does have an honest station stocked with ice and firewood. Therefore, it is essential to bring some cash along, just in case you need to restock during your stay. Planning with groceries and essentials is also recommended, as the resort focuses on simplicity rather than convenience shopping.

The bathroom facilities deserve a special mention. Throughout our stay, they remained neat, clean and well-maintained. Each bathroom includes a basin, toilet and hot shower, which makes a big difference after a long, sun-filled day outdoors.

Most of our time at Rivierzicht River Resort was spent slowing down and enjoying the simple pleasures of camping. Naturally, the river became our favourite spot during the heat of summer. On top of that, the sense of community added a special layer to our experience. Our neighbours were incredibly kind and helpful from the start. When we realised our tent pegs were missing, two lovely women nearby immediately offered us their spare ones. Later on, after Courtney forgot to pack starter wood and our fire refused to cooperate, another neighbour saved the evening by lending us their gas burner. Moments like these remind you that camping often brings out the best in people.

When we were not in the river, we filled our days with board games brought from home, afternoon naps and long conversations under the shade. For peace of mind, there were no snakes or hidden dangers in the river, which made swimming and relaxing far more enjoyable.

On our final morning, we woke up early and sat quietly in our camping chairs, listening to the birds greet the day. With hot coffee in hand, we took in the scenery and soaked up the calm atmosphere one last time. After breakfast, we packed up camp, said our goodbyes, and made the easy drive back home, already talking about when we would return.
