15 Farm Stalls I love visiting on a Road Trip

Road trips is the best way to fully enjoy what South Africa has to offer but you also need to pull over when the journey is long and, it’s often onto a gravel driveway and the oasis of Farm Stalls.

Somewhere across any highway or small town roads, you’ll find quirky (and often funny) signs directing you to visit that padstal; promising you the best Moer Koffie (strong coffee) and a great meal. It’s a staple road-side stop on any road trip where many of stall holders have crafted their own products, crafts, homemade clothing, ceramics and so much more; making the experience so unique and original.

I’ve visited quite a few farm stalls over the years and I can tell you, each stall is different from the rest and, there’s nothing better than discovering a new farm stall treasure.

Here are some of my favourite ones and feel free to share some your ours too:

1. Platform 62, Ashton

With an old steam train right in front, Platform 62 is famous for it’s array of interesting crafts and arts, wine boutique; featuring the surrounding wineries products on their selves and their Shed Restaurant. It’s the ideal pit-stop location along Route 62 and wonderful for the family to enjoy in it’s relaxed setting. Make sure to say hello to the many roasters that roam around as well as the huge pig!

2. Moerse Farmstall & Overberg Nursery, Napier

With its unmistakeable signs that make you realise how blessed you are to be South African, how can you not stop and have a peek? With the owner, Mannie ready to provide you with a Moerse lekker greeting, browse through the assortment of local crafts and products that will tickle your taste buds like his wife’s homemade strawberry jam! Have a seat and order the Moerse lekker vetkoek and roasterbrood that will highlight your trip.

3. Ronnies Sex Shop, Barrydale

Probably one of the most well-known farm stalls to date, Ronnies Sex Shop is one fascinating padstal and it all started with a prank. It was originally going to a fruit and veg stall but ended up being a pit-stop hub for many travellers and bikers alike; driving along Route 62. Say hi to Ronnie, sign your name on the wall, perhaps even hang a piece of clothing, sit and have a drink and, grab a bite to eat from Roadkill Café.

4. Die Stasie @ Hermitage, Addo

If you ever find yourself in Addo, Eastern Cape, I recommend you pullover at Die Stasie @ Hermitage situated right next to the train station; filled with many antiques and plants. There’s even a school desk outside! Go through some of the many old, vintage pieces or sit down and have a lemonade with a slice of their heavenly chocolate cake and ice-cream.

5. Lah-di-dah, Prince Albert

You’ll find Lad-di-dah at the end of Church street with it’s bright pink colours and quirky crafts that stay true to the Karoo lifestyle. You can easily spend the entire afternoon going through all their preserves, clothing and arts yet spend the last remaining hour with a quick lunch and coffee.

6. Die Winkel op Paternoster, Paternoster

A farm stall situated in the touristy town of Paternoster, it’s easily one of the busiest one you’ll find. Packed with many treats, homemade preserves and even their own local craft beer, you’ll find yourself with a basket full of local goods to take home. It has a small restaurant that can be enjoyed in its relaxed atmosphere.

7. Die Pampoenstalletjie, Worcester

Planning on taking a trip towards Robertson? Then it’s one place that cannot be missed with it’s visual feast of pumpkins; in all shapes, colours and sizes. Pampoenstalletjie is keeping it local by only stocking local farmers and nearby neighbours producers and confectionaries. Tip: Make sure to get yourself a pumpkin muffin with cheese and jam – It’s really good!

8. Ou Meul Bakkery, Riviersonderend

One of the pit stops for any trip along the N2 highway has got to be at Ou Meul Bakkery with their freshly baked pies and sweet treats. Take a moment to relax outside and enjoy your strong coffee or, pop in and admire the local craft shop next door.

9. Napier Farm Stall, Napier

You’ll find Napier Farm stall if you’re coming from Bredasdorp with the quirky antiques and a Welcome bike out front. Among the many local preserves and delectable homemade goods, sit down and watch for their Specials Board for interesting combinations.

10. Die Ou Tronk, Riversdale

What was once a jail, this charming building filled with character is now an operating coffee shop filled with all sorts of arts and crafts where various rooms of the courtyard have interesting collectables. Sit in the garden and have a slice of their carrot cake. You won’t regret that choice.

11. Koppi Koffi, Porterville

If you’re traveling along the R44 in Porterville, Koppie Koffie is a prime spot to stop for a bite to eat. Having been there twice, their menu always seems to surprise me. They even have a pizza named after the shop! If you had a long journey, they have accommodations right next door to the shop.

12. MWS Bistro, Route 62

Along the infamous Route 62, MWS Bistro recently just opened it’s door to the public; making it the ideal spot to take a break from all the driving. With both breakfast and lunch options, and the many locally producers to journey on home with, it’s kid-friendly and a great distraction from the long road ahead.

13. Inspired Creations, Heidelberg

Decorated in every colour imaginable, Inspired Creations will make you relive your childhood all over again with it’s quirky and vibrant building to the many homemade furnishings and crafts, they also have a coffee shop with a few treats to nibble on.

14. Sophie’s Choice Coffee Shop, Willowmore

What a charming, rustic antique shop in the tiny town of Willowmore in the Eastern Cape. You’ll find this store if you’re taking the back road back to the Western Cape. Stop in at Sophie’s Choice for good food and admire the many acquired fine pieces. It’s fascinating for a small town in the Klein Karoo.

15. The Padloper Coffee Shop, Riviersonderend

Another Riviersonderend coffee shop and one we recently discovered on our way back to Cape Town is The Padloper; painted in a bottle blue colour and with setting outside on the patio while you watch travellers go by. This delightful coffee shop has a few local produce on stands and the most amazing carrot cake served with coffee.
